Teenagers Get Instant Gratification When Using Social Networks

Media Bistro released current statistics for the use of social media applications amongst teenagers. Teenagers are now using other social networks other than Facebook to interact and share information. In analyzing the statistical data for 2012 versus 2013, Instagram has increased by five percent, whereas Facebook has dropped nine percent. Teenagers are using other apps such as, Instagram, Twitter, Vine, Kik, Snapchat, and YouTube to communicate and share their pictures and videos. Teens enjoy using apps such as Instagram because their goal is to get as many people to follow them. “It makes you feel relevant and wanted because of the number of followers a person can have and the likes you can have on your photos,” Nicole Uvieghara, a Murrieta, California, native and freshman at Arizona State University said, describing Instagram. Amanda Zager of Staples High School, Westport, Conn., said, “I use Instagram more than Facebook because it’s not as annoying with posts and notifications, and I find it more entertaining.”

As technology continues to advance, it is important to emphasize the respect and responsibility teenagers need to demonstrate when communicating with others in cyberspace. After carefully analyzing the statistical data in the infographic above, Nancy Vasquez, of Spring Hill, Fla., stated, “Unfortunately, I have found that students are in need of immediate gratification more than ever.  I say unfortunately for the simple reason that students are really having a difficult time just sitting in classrooms.”

Vasquez further explained, “The delivery of instruction has changed dramatically.  Instead of the teacher lecturing in front of the classroom the instructor is now a facilitator.  The classroom no longer has a front of the room.  We now have students working in collaborative groups while the teacher facilitates activities.”

“Throughout the past couple of years, I have found that veteran teachers who are resisting technology and the new way of the delivery of instruction have behavior issues with their students. Students find it difficult to sit for an extended period of time without some sort of technology to stimulate them,” stated Vasquez.
